There's a lot of empty space on posts, if we're just writing a short post.
Is it possible to have a variable text area, expanding to fit the space needed?

Possible certainly, but there a couple of reasons why it is like it is at the moment.
The simplest is that we need some vertical height to fit in the box to the right of the post with the information about the poster.
More subtly but more importantly, I feel that the thread is nicer to read when each post has a bit of breathing room. The downside is you have to scroll more, but usability studies show that people aren't as averse to scrolling as they once were, probably in part by how much easier it is to do so on modern computers and mobile devices.
Not saying it can't be changed of course! Anybody else have strong feelings about it?
