Windows 8 internal GPS to NMEA converter

Just found this

It converts the Windows Location API (the internal GPS present on win8 laptops, tablets etc) which is incompatible with all pre-win8 software, to the standard NMEA data stream coming out of a virtual COM port which should be compatible with everything.

Such software had previously been done for specific GPS chips but this one seems to be generic.

What it can't do, presumably, is report any details of the constellation because the win8 API stupidly hides that - like the Ipad API.

Why would one want to know about the constellation? The modern APIs provide accuracy information in meters, isn't that much more useful to know?

Does it? There's SENSORDATATYPESATELLITESINVIEWPRNS, SENSORDATATYPESATELLITESINVIEWELEVATION, SENSORDATATYPESATELLITESINVIEWAZIMUTH, SENSORDATATYPESATELLITESINVIEWSTNRATIO and SENSORDATATYPESATELLITESUSEDPRNS, and they seem to work for me.

To detect interference for example.

Interesting...

Why don't any of the win8 GPS apps show this? Including Oziexplorer which does support the win8 GPS but whose constellation display is removed when that GPS source is selected?

It would be interesting to buy that prog and see if the constellation data comes through via the virtual COM port. I might do that.
