What's the Best Fly-in in Europe?

10 Posts

Aside from the EuroGA flyins, what is the biggest / best annual flyin in Europe?

I’ve been to a number of smaller flyin, where there was an informal BBQ and everyone just sat around and had a chat. But one of the best that I’ve been to was when I was still a student. My school organised a group of aircraft to go to a flyin in Avranches in France.

This was a weekend type event, with a big dinner on the Saturday night. The hangar was cleared out, and filled with tables that (allowing for selective memory from approx. 15 years ago) I reckon held 20 people each. There certainly would have been a few hundred people sitting down to dinner in the hangar. The event was professionally catered for, and dinner was followed by a live band, dancing and a proper bar, all in the hangar. In case that wasn’t enough excitement, each place set at dinner was equipped with a pea shooter, to make sure people ‘interacted’. It worked

It was a wonderful event, but hasn’t been run for many years.

Are there other flyin such as this? Where?

What’s the biggest flyin in Europe? I’m guessing Tankosh, but I always got the impression that was more like a big trade show, but without all the exhibitors

I just got the mail about this year’s flyin to Alderney. It sounds similar. I might try go this year, but my last two efforts fell foul of the weather.

I asked about this here but nobody seems to know I have just heard this about Tankosh from a German pilot:

Tannkosh has ended in 2014 (no accident) Mathias Dolderer and his sister got too busy (he is doing Red Bull Air Races now).

Alderney? It was shut a week or so ago due to waterlogged grass. Must have ben even worse than normal. There is very little GA parking, too – enough for maybe 5 planes? It’s a great place to visit though, for a day trip. When is the fly-in?

The UK has the Sywell show, plus various events for ultralights etc.

That’s not correct. The last Tannkosh event took place in 2013, and in fact there was an accident. A bi-plane replica went off the runway on takeoff and hit a visitor who broke his leg. We were there.

The Flying Legends event at Duxford attracts a lot of flying visitors. Due to slot limitations at Duxford a lot of aircraft go to the light Airfield
at Fowlmere a mile or two away from Duxford. The normally have a good BBQ on the Saturday night..

I always enjoy The Flying Proms at Shuttleworth. Not strictly a flyin but loads of fantastic aircraft – http://www.shuttleworth.org/

The two lists at the start of Trevor’s post above are massive – even if most of the events aren’t “GA fly-ins”.

Alot of the fly ins in the UK that I have been to have been as dry as an Arabs sandal. That kind of social pea shooting social evening event I’ve yet to find, but I imagine France is a good place to look. The social side of the fly ins in Ireland has declined considerably in the last ten years. Compared to the huge fly in social events that happened when I was a teenager, like Abbeyshrule where people flew from Germany year after year to attend, things seem like a damp squib now.

I’d love to find the current Tannkosh replacement, as I heard the last few years were very memorable. I never got to attend myself but my friends had a ball.

The 3-day Texel Fly-in is by far the biggest fly-in in the Netherlands. In 2017 about 250 aircraft visited this event held at the friendliest GA airfield in the country.

The program usually includes, dinner, exhibitions, social gathering and static displays.

Alderney? It was shut a week or so ago due to waterlogged grass. Must have ben even worse than normal. There is very little GA parking, too – enough for maybe 5 planes? It’s a great place to visit though, for a day trip. When is the fly-in?

Probably only 5 spaces on the hard parking, but from memory, they generally park on the grass from memory and there is plenty of space there.

It’s 22-24 June. Details here

Full programme here.

I’ve not been yet, but might try to this year.

Alderney have not IME allowed hard surface parking for at least 10 years. But you are quite right about the overflow parking (here showing 1 plane):
