AeroShell W15W-50 vs Total Aero DM 15W-50

A bit unconclusive here then, datasheet says both it does contain corrosion inhibitors.

What about base oil type and blend?

The reason I stopped using AS 15-50 is because my US mechanic thought it caused starters to eventually slip. I still use AS100 120 and 65 with Camguard
For Multi I use Philips 20-50. w Camguard.

I got this reply from a US oil specialist:

“Everything I have been able to ascertain is that it [TOTAL oil] is rebranded aeroshell 15W-50”

I changed from aeroshell multigrade to total when my maintenance organisation were told to buy from distributors rather than direct from Shell. They are large consumers and didn,t want to deal through a middle man.I,ve had no issues with the Total product it appears to me to have a thicker consistency when checking the level. Its much more available to purchase and cheaper in the South East UK since Shell became distributor only they must have lost a lot of business.vbr Stampe

Has this oil been out a long while? I can’t say I have noticed it before. Also does anyone know if its a semi synthetic oil?

TOTAL oil (whether or not it is AeroShell and re-labelled) is rarely seen outside France, I think.

An ‘oil man’ told me that the Total 20W-60 is a licensed formula of Phillips, nothing to do with Shell. He recommended it and I have been using it since maybe 25 years.

TOTAL / ELF (the two brands are the same company) oils are quire popular at Czech flying clubs. Some engineers claim that Total is much more prone to forming gel-like deposits inside the engine than Aeroshell. I cannot judge it with certainty but I held a piece of this gel in my hands.

Is this the Exxon Elite sludge? It was horrible. No matter how regularly the engine was run, it was making the watery sludge. The oil analysis was no different to Aeroshell (I did several cycles of comparisons, swapping between them) but the sludge was obviously not a good thing.

But I thought Phillips was 20-50W ?
