Very glad pilot and passengers were unhurt – am wondering whether the aircraft had EGNOS capability and whether using the RNP 26 which is one of the few UK LPVs available post Brexit, would have helped avoid this accident?
In any event a real testament to the tough Bonanza wings.

Yeah… shit happens. I had this kind of “blindness” plenty of times.
Lots of bad things can happen when landing into the sun.
(I’m now flying behind a three bladed prop with higher idle speed so haven’t had a repeat performance – it was a one off)
Interesting… I’m pretty low hours compared to most here but whilst landing into the sun with a dirty windshield can be a pain, it’s never put me into a dangerous, or uncomfortable situation. I’ve never understood what the big deal is to be honest.
Likely the state of windshield was suboptimal?
Most of GA has windows in a poor condition. On rentals it is almost universal. People clean plexi windows with paper tissues…
It also helps to have nice adjustable sun visors, and clean sunglasses.
It’s hard to keep windscreens in the absolutely perfect and flawless condition that would be required to give a crystal clear view when flying towards the setting sun – ours is reasonably new, and we only clean it with microfibre cloths, but even so you end up with some blooming when flying directly towards the setting sun.
Pledge and microfibre should keep windscreens reasonably healthy, but as @alioth points out, perspex is not a Zeiss Icon quality glass :)
Pledge
If you can get it. I used it all the time in the US but it seems completely unobtainable in Europe, very strange. I found one supplier in Europe but they wanted a crazy price AND even crazier shipping. I’ll get a few next time I’m in the US.
I think my cockpit bubble is 1967. It looks good. But into the sun it’s effectively opaque. With the sun just above the horizon and straight down the runway I could only see the runway edges and it was a
no-damage landing. A useable sunshield, other than a cap, cannot be fitted.
A CPL pax survivor reported sun glare in a recent NTSB Pa28 fatal on approach.
PS I have Pledge, bought from Tesco. Read the contents before buying. There are different formulations.
