I’d read the asymmetry as a consequence of a) most airplanes can fly significantly slower than standard cruise but not significantly faster and b) due to wind influence the impact of flying slower on EET is always bigger than the impact of flying faster.
The amount of work that went into the Eurocontrol software and what for? To “control” about 2 planes flying IFR, in airspace which is almost totally empty
