Flying between layers - is it a good idea

My experience too. I’m also VFR only, and I only practice this over the sea, where staying below reduces the glide options and on top is usually far above my PA-28’s, or my, ceiling. Strangely there’s always a hole to get down to below cloudbase when the layers inevitably narrow, or the coast beckons.

One night long ago the radio in my office burst into life with an exchange on London information. “I don’t know if your’e interested”, the pilot said, “but we’re a pair of C-170’s from the US VFR via Wick and en route to Paris. Right now we’re between cloud layers in the moonlight and it’s absolutely beautiful”. He was right, they weren’t interested.
