What is the largest home build aircraft?

10 Posts

Do you know any large home built aircraft? One multi engine piston recently crash landed in my country but probably it was not the biggest one…

Around here, homebuilts are supposed to be two-seaters. Four seaters are possible, but with a steep increase of the amount of paperwork involved. This somewhat limits the overall dimensions of these aircraft as it does not make much sense to build a four-seater the size of a Boeing 737…

There was one called the Global Explorer that was pretty large, a twin with 300 HP engines IIRC. The issue with deciding on the largest homebuilt might be that as they get larger, the space and labor demands drive the builder to enlist more help until it’s not really a homebuilt any more.

Depending on your definition of homebuilt, the Hughes H4 is a strong candidate – you’ll no find a bigger. And it was after all built in Mr Hughes’ backyard, so to speak… ;) It also was a one-off, which cannot be said of the Global Explorer mentioned above. Not that homebuilts cannot be built in multiples, but still …

It indeed depends on what you are looking for:
-Amateur built (but expert-designed)
-Amateur designed (and built)
-Experimental (to perform experiments…)
-Uncertified

Do you count one-offs or just kit/plans aircraft for genuine amateur construction?

One very big amateur project was the Vickers Vimy replica that re-created three of the original epic glights, albeit with modern BMW motors.

The only home-built aircraft by Boeing was this one (and it really looks like it):

In terms of commercially available kits, there’s the Sherpa K650T which claims a 6500lb gross and 3000lb useful load.

Some of the Comp Air turboprops were available as kits up to about 10,000 lb for the Comp Air 12
