From here

Have they sorted the GPS rollover coming up in March?

Garmin have stated the GNS and GTN are ok.

Avidyne don’t have a fix yet.

What about all the handhelds, phones, etc?

KLN94?

Will EASA be through the certification process by then?

EASA do not certify the updates anymore. Under the Bilateral agreement and the TIP specifications it is approved automatically.

Anyone that have a link to a Garmin statement that everything is OK (even for older units)? Can’t find it…

I wonder what the reality behind this is?

If say the KLN94 will lose RAIM prediction, that won’t bother anybody even if it makes it illegal for IFR. But if it stops working, or if this is an issue that affects GPS receivers generally, there will be havoc. These older boxes will never get updated because for example everybody at King left around 2003.

Merely not displaying the correct UTC would not make the unit useless but you would no longer be able to read off the ETA for waypoints for example.

Does anyone know the actual details and what is affected?

The GPS boxes will continue to function, but some time stamps will go mad, i.e. as a result subscription may not be identified as valid, because the rollover will time-travel the GPS device from April 6, 2019 to August 21, 1999 (week counter zero). So, if you have a chart subscription, the GPS will tell you on April 7, 2019 it is not yet valid, because it thinks it is 1999, and refuses to enable use of it. Btw, not having the correct date and UTC would render the GPS position useless, as the calculations of the position from the signals travel time depend on the calendar date. Fortunately the base data is received from the satellites.
