100UL (merged thread)

They say they have that in place already actually.

Has anyone seen the latest update from AOPA on the Avgas situation?

In the worst case, TEL will not be authorized because either the industry has not applied for it or the authorities have not granted it. A lead-free successor fuel that solves the overall problem is also not being developed in time. In this case, after a transitional period, from the so-called “Sunset Date” in autumn 2024, TEL will no longer be introduced into the EU as a pure substance, only as a 1 per million dilution in the Avgas. This in turn would mean that the European Avgas 100LL would have to be produced in the next available refinery outside the EU – which would currently be in the USA – and then transported to Europe. According to initial estimates, this could increase the price of Avgas 100LL by up to one Euro per liter and thus in practice take it out of the market.

Any thoughts on this?

Where is Avgas for the European market produced now? I was always under the impression that there are very few refineries in the world that make the stuff.

Warter who I believe are owned by Orlen make all kinds of boutique fuels (racing, aviation). Probably BP does too, as may Total.

When TEL finally gets banned, either Hjelmco will have 100UL figured out, or we’ll just pay the Americans for their 100UL.

Also see this thread: https://www.euroga.org/forums/maintenance-avionics/1681-100ul-merged-thread which Peter will likely just merge this one into. [ You’ve guess it right ]

Surely this is the bigger news….

Posts merged into existing “100UL” thread.

This news came up before a few days back. My prediction is that it won’t happen. Brussels is full of bodies/organisations, staffed by very well paid people, which work 24/7/365 to ban this and that “environmental hazard” and they are constantly generating updated lists of banned substances (99% of which nobody has heard of, let alone used, let alone released into the environment) while the big stuff, like lead in car batteries, carries on because there are no alternatives.

One day the commercial/regulatory scene will firm up for 100UL and then it will come in, but it won’t happen until the US is in a position to adopt it.

They fail to mention that this “G100UL” will cost about € 0.2 more per liter than 100LL (and I assume this is a best case scenario). There is also no mention of what exactly the TEL has been replaced with, which is very peculiar. The ordinary 100UL is simply 100LL with the led removed. Now, if one result of this is that 100LL is banned outright, then the market will obviously go towards the cheaper fuel, which will be mogas (by far) and 100UL.

They say 100LL and G100UL can be mixed. What about 100UL and mogas?

Removing TEL and adding nothing gives you 91UL.

Maybe, but MOGAS is rare in much of Europe, and the “mogas is what you get by filling jerrycans at a petrol station” community can do that only with very small planes. Most people don’t have the muscle to chuck 10-20 20-litre jerrycans on the back if a pickup truck, and that assumes you even have a pickup truck. Also car petrol has all kinds of crap in it these days; try starting a generator after say 6 months… the only way I got one started the other day was by removing the air filter cover and squirting IPA in there.

Mixing with 100LL is going to be a requirement for any commercially viable 100UL fuel

G100UL is not 100LL minus TEL plus other additives. It’s a completely new fuel.

They say mixing is prohibited.
