The importance of proper wiring - and component positioning

1 Post

The report details the forced landing of one of the Tecnams flown at my Geneva club.

Due to a short circuit and improper wiring, one of the two 22’000 microF condensers exploded right after takeoff, generating ample amounts of white smoke in the cockpit (and the smell was pretty bad too). The pilot elected to go for an immediate off-field landing after having opened the canopy to clear the smoke. The photos show the damage which is pretty impressive – the explosion has ripped the mounting bracket off the firewall.

Interestingly EASA and Tecnam as a result of the accident have decided to “reduce the replacing interval of the component”… which does bugger all to fix the problem!
