Cleaning gas suspension units before a flight

I just wipe it off with a rag or a tissue.

I think the problem is that if there is grease or oil on the shiny steel part, abrasive dirt sticks to it.

The shiny steel part is actually chrome plate that has been ground to a very tight tolerance.

The chrome part should be cleaned with a MIL-5606 type fluid, this is very good at soaking, and lifting most dirt. The dirt is then simply wiped off with a cloth leaving a very thin flim of the fluid on the strut.

I always do the same when I fly the Cessna’s.
