Pilots: start your diesels

…and that was why 80/87 was discontinued by fuel companies in favor of a single piston aircraft fuel, 100LL.

Unfortunately for me, my 4 gallons/hr consumption of 80/87 and the usage of others like me, comprising a large fraction of the US GA fleet by numbers of planes, didn’t drive the AVGAS market! Obviously the suppliers knew everybody affected would switch to 100LL at a slightly higher price when 80/87 was discontinued, so less cost of distribution and no loss of sales.

I bought my last 80/87 in around 2004 in Porterville, California. It was supposedly the last available anywhere after many decades of production, advertised as such anyway, and certainty the last we saw. A group of us flying on a cross country filled our tanks to the brim. Now I see older US FBOs still having two tanks and pumps, today both filled with 100LL, but any fuel stations I’ve seen installed in the last 10-15 years have only one AVGAS tank.
