STOL-drag meeting in Scotland

This is a game usually confined to desert areas of the USA but a few pilots are contemplating the possibility of such a meeting in Scotland (or an adjacent motorsport-friendly jurisdiction) next year.

Not a competition, just for personal development of stick and rudder skill with no winners, losers or prizes, but if anyone is remotely interested, please PM.

Looks as if we may have enough interest for a trial gathering…

However, we don’t want to bore the backsides off the other 99% here so will probably create a Telegram or WhatsApp group in due course.

Meanwhile, answers to a few FAQs:

Q: What is STOL-drag?
A: Google knows all.

Q: What kind of airplanes?
A: Anything which you’re happy to land off-airport. Husky, Cub, Maule, C1xx, Jodel, Auster, Kitfox, Zenith… Probably not a Pitts or Extra though. Because it’s as much about slowing the aircraft down for precision landings as about taking off short or flying fast, it seems that a Kitfox was able to give Patey’s gazillion SHP turbine Wilga (currently “resting”) a run for its money.

Q: Something for non-flying friends to do?
A: Yes, we’ll need helpers and moral support . There are several local places of cultural, historical and ecological interest, but this is rural northern Britain, not Paris or Rome.

Q: Where?
A: We are spoilt for choice here but possibly somewhere on Scotland’s Côte d’Azur or just between a couple of nice silage fields.

Q: When?
A: Aye, there’s the rub. We’ll need a few days of decent weather, not just here but so folks can get here VFR. So short notice.

Yes it sounds jolly good. I’ll have the 206 in North Yorkshire for the summer so it’s easy to come over and go on up. You will probably get so many people you’ll have to limit numbers.

If you shared the post on Facebook you’d get a good bit of interest.

A beach would be nice if you can swing it :-)
