Is there anything better than LiveATC to get accustomed with RT phraseology?

You also may not find a lot of VFR flight recordings

any tips for good one on VFR? it´s easy to find one but takes while to select a good one

does a decent job of RT. The channel is a mix of IFR and VFR though. Some US flying there as well.

However, UK RT is a totally different animal. Both in terms of accent and vocabulary.

Mainz (EDFZ) & Egelsbach (EDFE), Germany

The OP has not said where he is based. He would possibly appear to be in Ireland (from his post) so the UK accent will not be far off. But he has not actually said that. He could be anywhere at all. His profile is empty.

The really key thing is to not use slang and casual expressions when flying outside the English speaking zone (in Europe, basically UK and Ireland) – because many/most ATCOs understand the aviation phrases only. And many (myself included) would say one should stick to aviation phrases for flying everywhere, but obviously in the English zone you can get away with other stuff.

That is why listening to VFR is probably not very useful because the vast majority of VFR traffic flies only in their own country, and they do use casual expressions. They do it in the UK and everywhere else.

And unfortunately many videos show poor cockpit procedures e.g. never writing down clearances etc which is really bad for a PPL student. One could debate on how well this correlates with sloppy radio work

Here’s one with a bit of everything … RT, cockpit chit-chat & video, nice view out the window, and a surprise at the end. There must be quite a bit of editing, because the radio traffic doesn’t seem anywhere near as busy as I would expect flying into SFO.

First LH A380 flight into SFO ??

You have to heavily edit cockpit video (VFR or IFR) otherwise it will contain cockpit conversations, the pilot talking to himself plus some terribly bad radio work by other aircraft. I once got a recording of a bizjet pilot, still on the ground at a major UK airport, which would have probably got them into big trouble. Obviously it was edited out.

Plus, in the UK, recording ATC is supposedly illegal – see here

Anyway, the full cockpit sound track is very unattractive to listen to.

Except for the AAIB ;)

Actually, from what some of them have said, it is pretty unattractive for them too because they will usually listen to it only in fatal accidents. One of them once posted on some forum, many years ago, that the sounds and voices stay with you for ever.

@Boscomantico, thanks for the link in post #12 above, the guy’s flight from Milano Linate to Germany was really enjoyable to watch. I also enjoyed Peter’s flight to Croatia a lot, landing on an island is so great.

Nice reference to the “f**** updraft”…….

Get yourself a scanner and go listening AND looking at your nearest aerodrome.
It may be interesting to hear “AB-CDE extending downwind for separation” but if you do not know where the planes are it doestn’t really say very much. For just one example.
Of course one can learn from listening to ATC on the www but it is too much like playing flight simulator and thinking you are learning to fly.
