My dream is to fly in Europe, but I have some concerns...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jobsworth

… will get you started since the term ‘jobsworth’ probably isn’t well known in the US.

Oh man, I’ve seen those yellow vests but didn’t realize there was a term for it :) We have plenty of Jobsworths in the US as well. Ugh.

Ok so the Empuriabrava tip brings up a point. With a Google search I was able to find some basic information on the airport, but really not enough to comfortably fly there. I can’t even find the radio frequencies. My impression is that online tools are just less used over there. But where do people go for airport information and charts? Lots of country-specific outlets? The stuff is online but hard to find?

Nothing, NOTHING!, compared to over here, UK especially.

Re online tools. You are correct, at least up to a point. The info is much, much more fragmented here – there is no ForeFlight :-(((((

For Spain, check the AENA website which covers most Spanish airports (the ones run by them), homepage here: http://www.aena.es/csee/Satellite/Home/es/
Ampuriabrava (or Empuriabrava, you’ll find both spellings) unfortunately isn’t one of them….

http://ourairports.com/airports/LEAP gives a good deal – but no frequency – I have found 122,400 somewhere, likely on the “all spanish” a/d list though that is not really complete either.

www.ourairports.com gives me an ever better feeling. But in many cases, nothing serves better than a websearch for the airport – “Landshut Flugplatz” or so works well, usually.

Ampuriabrava (or Empuriabrava, you’ll find both spellings)

The one is “Spanish” aka Castilian, the other Català – another subtlety that might surprise visitors.

PS if Spain is still on your wish list you could look into LELH Alhama de Murcia – seems to have an air park associated, with bungalows/appartments rented out per week.

LELH Alhama de Murcia

This, AFAIK, is a scam that was never completed – like many projects in Spain.

Ah, ok, thanks, glad to learn better!
@Nickmatic: apologies!

Ampuriabrava (LEAP) is a great little airfield, privately run, no hassle. Definitely no instrument approaches though, and very (I mean very) busy with parajumpers.
Shortish runway, but doable for a Mooney. Quite a way from Barcelona though, I’d say 1.5 hours by car.

Private field, Mallorca, Spain

I don’t understand the difficulties in getting an approval for your own field in Italy and Spain. Does the traditional way of doing business in Southern Europe, talking to some local Mafia boss, and bribery not work anymore?
