Anybody have a simple solution for formating a USB stick with FAT16 on a Mac? I run Parallels/W7 on my MacBook Pro only for that, but I’d rather get rid of all Windows related stuff, to have more space. I thought there’s maybe a tool … no luck yet.
Run Disk Utility (usually in Applications > Utilities) then select your USB stick on the left and click on the Erase tab. Then select the MS-DOS (FAT) format option and click Erase – done!
No, that formats it with FAT32 … and I need FAT16 . Of course I had tried that :-)
thanks, Roger – i will try the terminal comand!

That’s weird, i would have made the same reply as Chris !
For me FAT32 is the “ExFat” choice not the FAT choice in Disk Utilities
exFAT != FAT32

As already suggested, there’s no way of doing this via the GUI, you have to use the command line.
All my sticks are over 2GB so FAT16 makes no sense.
you can do it with the terminal.
That’s the point. I need 2 GB sticks for my Avidyne Avionics – and they have to be formatted FAT16.
Tried the terminal comand last night – and formatted one of my external HDDs by accident … fortunately I could undo it.
