Flying Ghost Villages in Italy

I have always found it fascinating how property can be simply abandoned. It is seen a lot in southern Europe – Spain Italy Croatia Greece… it would never happen in the UK because land is worth so much and it would be bought and redeveloped.

Very interesting, and a very nice video for those of us who are missing our visits in Italia this year.

If I remember correctly there was a TV documentary in Castelpoto here in the US, or perhaps another village similarly abandoned after the same 1980 earthquake. Perhaps someday there will be a monumental project to rebuild and reinforce, and 500 years from now the period of abandonment will be a footnote in the town’s long history.

My father loved Italy, loved Italian women too… he was there c. 1947; Trieste. Often spoke Italian at home, even though nobody could understand… Hearing the language reminds me of it. Even has a slight resemblance:
