I think you put the emphasis on ULM’ists, but Jan writes about the local ULM’ists… given that the “gallic shrug” is a well-known workaround, that is quite likely…

Indeed – and again confirming I am only going by feel, not by any deep-founded knowledge – flying, and probably many other aspects of life, in Corsica must be above all Latin, much more than “Gallic”.
