Restricted Area LFR158B

Considering a route from Gray Saint Adrien (LFEV) to Lausanne (LSGL) which crosses a restricted area with a base of 1500’, well below MSA. Any knowledge on this? Is it generally possible to get a higher crossing? It appears to be active every day.

The R158A and B are not all the time active – in fact far from it, and rarely both at the same time. But it is true that when it is the case and that the R45 are all active, there remains only a small corridor through the Besançon area which is pretty small but just enough to cross at low altitude. It is up to you to check from time to time on a map according to the heights of the surrounding obstacles. (as the maps are all in AGL)

Be careful under the R45S6.1 if the R45C is active in this case you can not pass at all, you must pass under the R45S7 800ft ground or indeed above the S6.1 if the 158B is not active.

Thanks LFHNflightstudent – that’s very helpful

But again, the AZBA charts only refer to the low-flying areas (RTBA). For all other restricted areas, you still have to check AIP/NOTAMs (and/or enquire with the FIS).

Also check any SUP AIP as the legacy entries in the AIP or the VFR guides are less frequently updated

I always assumed you can go through most RA that are active in the AIP with a head-up from French FIS units but I think it is “weekend user experience” or “simple luck”?

It will be a weekend, so fingers crossed. It’s a long way round if not!
