Night landing at O'Hare

1 Post

Evening rush hour in the Chicago area is very busy with long line of arrivals into several airports. VFR at night with transits through the airports is very enjoyable – US ATC being more paranoid on wake turbulence than the convention over in Europe (for example the VFR bottle neck near the QE Bridge under the LCY approach path might give some pause in the U.S.), you get clearances via the overhead. Stansted and Luton tend to do the same.

The FAA designated examiners spend serious time on the oral on the candidate demonstrating understanding taxi notams and pre planning expected taxi instructions. Apparently O’Hare has a penalty area you get sent to if you screw up on your taxi instructions. Presumably the confused in the penalty box, ice hockey style, are to be dealt with when things quieten down.
