Flying in New Mexico suggestions

I will be going to New Mexico for my father-in-laws 80th in July. We will fly into Las Vegas and then driving to Taos (where he is from) for up to a week before meandering back to Las Vegas via the Grand Canyon.

Whilst I have a US passport, I doubt I will have enough time to get checked out during the week in Taos so am thinking of flying with an instructor from someplace, bearing in mind that Taos is quite high altitude in any event. I note that Angel Fire airport near Taos is at 8382 feet, the fourth highest elevation airport in the United States and boasts one of the longest runways in the country at 8,900 feet so rather altiport. Neither the Taos nor the Angel Fire airports seem to offer any form of aircraft rental on their website.

Any suggestions/recommendations regarding flying opportunities or aviation related in that (rather large) area welcome – I expect that there are more possibilities around Las Vegas, but I don’t think I will be spending much time around there according to current in-law planning.

Thanks in advance -

I’ve landed at Santa Fe in October, it’s a nice airport with a lot of general aviation activity. There are some flight schools there, but I obviously can’t tell if they’re good or bad. Maybe you should ask this question on a US forum?

I have used this site before to look for plane rentals: http://pilotplanet.com/directory/New-Mexico/
Not on that list, but in Santa Fe: http://nmsportaviation.com/

Flew around the VLA a long time ago but that’s quite a distance from Taos…Fantastic scenery btw New Mexico the most impressive flying I have ever done….Your lucky Taos is a great flying area, flew there with a 172 with three adults take was like a 747..
