The difference is easy to remember. Virga go down, Viagra makes things go up. Similar to stalagtites and stalagmites.
Virga are pretty common in the western US, but I honestly doubt that these were virgae (?). They happen when the air is really dry, like RH <30%, and trust me, this does not happen on the French Atlantic coast. I think it’s more likely they were just oddly shaped clouds.
Virga are not uncommon off the Scottish coast, and presumably elsewhere in the UK.
