That’s a zero information posting.

Saanen is ex-military and open. The (VFR) final approach on 26 is very cool as you don’t really see the runway until quite late.

Very interesting – I’ll have to get there. One of the enduring memories of CH is quiet runways with no structures visible, in bucolic surroundings.

Langenthal

Yes, one can go there, the restaurant is good (mix between Thai and Swiss cuisine), but other than that I wouldn’t know what to do there.

But it is the only airport here where you can operate almost all day (if you can get a slot)

Good joke, right now (in summer) every grass strip has better practical opening hours (typically 8am to end of civil twilight, with some lunch break) than LSZH, because handling starts to get very expensive after about 8pm and apart from the 4 slots at 6:30am (LT) which aren’t all that often usable weatherwise there are only 4 VFR outbound slots at 8:30am before about 11am, so the mornings in LSZH are quite dead, VFR wise.

Are any of the Swiss … outlying (ex)military airports ever available

Mollis LSMF is PPR 24h but doable.

In case anyone’s interested, here’s the availability of LSZH airport slots for category A aircraft. The IFR times are published in the AIP, section 2.20.2.3.1. The VFR slot times and numbers are published in the VFR manual section 10.2.1.4.

Is that approach category A?

Does that mean if I fly faster, more slots are available?

[for example, Brussels accepts you anytime but requires 160kt on the approach… which is fun in an SEP…]

Biggin Hill

Is that approach category A?

Yes

Does that mean if I fly faster, more slots are available?

No, you need a faster plane (they might take you in a PC12 or similar, which is AFAIK category A too)

Anyone got experience of les Eplatures LSGC. I’m considering a stop over here enroute to LGKR. The southern direction SID is interesting to get high enough to cross the Alps. I believe there is a good Hotel nearby (walking distance) too.

EGNS/Garey Airstrip, Isle of Man

LSGC is nice, prices are reasonable (around 30CHF for landing < 1.2T) for the infrastructure (full IFR), the location is not prone to develop fog. There’s quite a bit of terrain around the airfield, so procedures are accordingly. The runway is somewhat sloped, and due to the altitude can seem longer than it really is for normally aspirated aircraft, so check takeoff run / climb performance.

There’s a restaurant on the airport, and a fast food outfit in very short walking distance. Don’t know about hotels nearby, but both Le Locle and La Chaux de Fonds are fairly close (final turn of the circuit is over the center of La Chaux de Fonds, and the city has grown almost to the threshold).

Thank you for the information tomjnx. LSGC has customs so I believe I can fly there direct. The hotel nearby is:
Grand Hotel Les Endroits (phone : +41329250250 or website :http://www.hotel-les-endroits.ch/site/).
I need to take oxygen, the airway south from there is FL160. Weather planning will be crucial I guess.
