Wood pellets are one of the worst things to be burning.

You have to keep putting them in, don’t you? Or is there some kind of auto feed?

AFAIU every pellet burner has a feed mechanism. Otherwise you could just as well burn firewood.

Correct there is a feed system. Some you fill the hopper once a week but some wood pellet boilers only need to be filled once a month.
The cooking range I am looking at takes a little longer to get to full heat than other fuels but it can be used on a timer and/or thermostat.
Some of the Italian pellet cooking ranges can be controlled over smartphone.
They are a little higher maintenance but nothing onerous.

France

Unbelievable that this is a current proposition.

Like I do

There are some people with pellet burners here also. They usually have much higher efficiency than wood burners, and are usually automatic, can be connected to central heating etc., so it’s a better option in many respects. Much more refined. But, burning wood in a traditional fireplace has it’s charm, and the efficiency is of little concern other than you have to put in a log more often to keep the fire going.

In the summer place (all year round place actually), we have electric heating. We just use it to keep some heat there when we’re gone. No lower than about 10 degrees, except the bathroom which is kept at normal temperature. The only other heating is a wooden stove. Then we use wood to maintain a normal temperature.

Sounds interesting…

No alternative to electricity will be lethal here in Scotland. We had no electricity for a day. The village 2 miles away had several days outage. Some source of heat is needed after storm damage in wanted.

In the summer you can do this for a bit but normally, unless you have some massive battery, run down the one in your EV, or have a generator

  • your heating won’t work (gas, oil, electric, heat pump, etc)
  • you won’t be on EuroGA because there will be no phone or internet (old phone line would be ok but only with an old phone on it, forget ADSL or fibre)
  • no lights
  • no cooking (gravity oil fed aga type stove is ok – very wasteful much of the year)

Off grid is hard work

We are in the countryside (work too) and have had power cuts of 10+ hours, so there is a 3.5kW generator at both locations, and fuel for a few days. Long term, forget it without major work.

Interesting video. Nuclear is the way to go. You just need to eddukkkattte people that a reactor is not a bomb Poootin has made a good start by invading Ukraine but he won’t be around for ever
