Corona / Covid-19 Virus - General Discussion (politics go to the Off Topic / Politics thread)

Private care homes exist only to make money for the owners. Nobody would set one up otherwise!

Nobody will open a shop selling shoes unless they are going to “siphon off” the money

Of course, but not all owners try to squeeze the utmost out of the company without giving a second thought about the quality of what the company produces. That seems to be more prevalent in sectors where it is difficult for the buyer to set and evaluate quality standards and/or where the buyer is not the one who is actually receiving the service — like in elderly care.

For sure, western governments were perhaps slow to realise what was going on, but if the info you are basing your decisions on is from a place where the real story is being surpressed and a politically happy version is being repeated, then the decisions arent going to be very good. It was only when the situation in Italy was understood that any really informed decisions could be made, and by then it was too late.

These are the facts and you’re right but what kind of governments and political leaders base their decisions on information from such source like Chinese Communist Party spokesman? What were the intelligence services doing all this time? When Iraq was allegedly producing weapons of mass destruction or Iran was enriching uranium, US intelligence was able to gather information. Suddenly, they don’t know what’s going on in Chine for two months while at the same time we were able to hear alarming voices from non-oficial Chinese sources. Blaming others for own incompetence is characteristic of weak persons/leaders.

A lot seem to, particularly when the WHO act as a mouthpiece and state things which we know now were wrong. The WHO ignored Taiwan who pointed this out, (so as not to offend China), China knew there was person to person transfer and told the who there was none, who repeated this out as fact, the WHO advised against a travel ban and refused to declare it a pandemic.

It was not easy at the start and having the real information hidden by the CCP has made things far far worse.

Professor witty recommended this article in today’s UK briefing

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/apr/30/coronavirus-deaths-how-does-britain-compare-with-other-countries

its fatality rate doubles every seven years as a person ages.

The did know – the so-called ‘leaders’ didn’t listen and/or were (and still are!) too afraid to confront China.

In any case, this doesn’t absolve the Chinese leadership from their responsibility for the pandemic.

The problem is that China has been producing these viruses for a long time (as a consequence of their highly dodgy animal practices, lots of rural Chinese living closely with birds, etc) and most people thought this would be yet another one which will die out by itself, like the others did.

It was not until much later that the world outside realised this one had different properties:

  • a long incubation time → not detected in the population until weeks later
  • highly infectious / contageous → easy to catch it
  • infectious before symptoms appear → easy to spread it because even “socially responsible” people (a small minority!) spread it
  • a lot of people who catch it die of it (much worse than common flu)
  • it does strange things to the body (even 2-3 months later, it is still being discovered)
  • there is no treatment (some drugs may have a partial effect)
  • the only known life support method – ventilation – itself kills many of the victims
  • strongly preferentially kills obese people (a common condition these days)

Most of these are quite new. In particular the growth curve is steep and the medical system cannot cope with the numbers.

I’m on the side of with Elon Musk with this.

Garden Centres, Builders Merchants etc have been open since the start of the lock down in Jersey (which in some ways is less strict than the UK) – Guess what, some days we have zero new cases and our curve is almost flat.

Then look at Alderney, I flew there and just missed Peter (it would have been nice to meet up with you Peter!). Not one case there but they have been locked down by Guernsey. Why would the next door Government lock down a small community with zero cases?

It’s all bonkers. Civil servants in high viz jackets seizing their moment of power. I know a few people who have caught it. One was on a running machine throughout the whole infection – late 50’s and not slim. His wife caught it from him and both were less bad than the flu. The other one worked in a care home and was back to work in 12 days. Again much less bad than the flu.

The Daily Mail just reports the worst news to get clicks and the BBC is a lost cause for objective reporting.

We should be doing a much better protecting the old people and those at risk. Let’s spend more of our resources on care homes.

Did they all test positive?

I have heard from many people that they “had it”, often after some ski trip in Jan/Feb, but none of them had tests.

Jersey_Flyer I swing fromm such a pragmatic approach to one less so.

The clear reality is that for a few this is a very dangerous disease, and it isnt just the elderly, or those with other conditions. In that much it is different.

It is also clear that left unchecked those few are sufficient in the whole population to collapse any already under resourced health service (which are the health services of most first world countries).

I suspect if the rate of infection was less, then we would probably accept a level of mortality – but it isnt.

There arent any countries that have done nothing, and allowed the disease to run its course, because none could cope.

Everyone is attempting to balance a level of loss of life against these other factors.

I suspect there are some from the developing world. Ecuador seems to be suffering.
