Corona / Covid-19 Virus - General Discussion (politics go to the Off Topic / Politics thread)

If this data is real, it just shows the idiocy of the current policies. How on earth is restricting the number of people you are allowed to meet at home make a difference if most infections are in ‘educational settings’ (which probably includes socialising students), ‘workplace settings’ and care homes?

Biggin Hill

It appears the restrictions are mainly “up north”, according to the Daily Trash.

This is really serious though:

But, seriously, this focuses one’s mind on not catching it. These people cannot be written off as having the “usual” dispositions.

Iceland is having to tighten rules again. I’ve been impressed by their Government and Media handling of Covid-19, compared to UK and US.

This has been said in as many words by UK officials, saying they don’t want the specific communities coming under attack.

I don’t understand this. What is preventing independent media from publishing whatever they want? All the data is out there for sure, it’s only a matter of presenting that data in an intelligible manner so people can understand it. It is well known here that initially the spread among certain minority groups were skyrocketing. The main reason was they simply didn’t understand the recommendations (washing hand, social distance etc), a pure language problem. This was sorted out fast’ish, and from then on no difference was seen compared with the rest of the population.

There is no way to answer this in a PC way, and this really almost belongs into the political thread, but basically, there are several factors in the UK which are a hot potato for mainstream media

  • the biggest spread factor has been – at times, anyway – crowded multi-generational households in close-proximity groups e.g. eating and other festivities
  • the above correlates heavily with Asian communities, which also carry way above average health factors (diabetes, heart disease, etc)
  • the poorest people tend to live in the most crowded areas, and tend to be in the poorest health / have the greatest obesity levels, due to various factors e.g. poor education, lack of parental involvement…
  • the CV19 restrictions have made many young people extremely frustrated and produced an explosive atmosphere where many are looking for the smallest reason to go and smash something up
  • Brits don’t like being told what to do (quite different to most mainland European countries)
  • the BLM issue exploded (with the police incident in the US) right in the middle of this, and made the whole media machine desperate to climb up that tree to show they support it, regardless of how cynical and opportunistic they look when doing it, which in turn has made it impossible to address any issues where race is a factor

All these things are a massive political/media hot potato. Most of the above challenges exist all over Europe, of course, especially for the older countries with a colonial past (Norway probably doesn’t have that issue; well not recently).

Also there is no obvious solution which a government could implement – especially with a largely rule-noncompliant population and a government system which believes strongly in being non-totalitarian and consensual.

One day historians will observe how a number of things coincided to create so many changes in the world. Tom Clancy would have loved it – such a pity he’s dead. He would be halfway through another brilliant 5cm thick book And with Trump himself being 50/50 right now, we aren’t done yet. Things could get massively more interesting…

There are parts of the UK population which don’t speak English but they are a very small minority. The UK has a pretty good level of integration.

@Peter

Peter, don’t worry! I can testify, this is NOT TRUE. Fake news at its worst…. so relax and go to the pub! :)

Great to know – thanks

Today’s news – the UK is not planning to vaccinate everybody; just those “at risk”

I wonder if everybody with an aviation medical is at risk?

These are the latest daily positive test numbers, after the adjustment for the “IT error”

For comparison, it was estimated that during the peak of the first wave, it was about 100k/day but very few were being tested.
From this app the estimate of actual infections is about 20k/day.

I got about 6 minutes in. If I die within the next few weeks do you think my family could find a clever lawyer to sue him for boring me to death?

Here’s a fascinating look at the virus in the NYT: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/health/coronavirus-unveiled.html?action=click&module=Top%20Stories&pgtype=Homepage
