Might be an interesting project for pilots

I’ve backed it with 26 GBP. The first version ships already and shows wind speed but not direction. This new version would be really handy.
What would you use this for, in aviation?
I suppose it might be handy at an unmanned strip, if conditions look marginal.
Are they plugging it into the 3.5mm headphone jack?
If this article from last year (in Danish) is still valid, then the headphone jack is just used to keep the thing physically attached to the phone.
The actual metering is done by measuring the changes in the magnetic field using the phone’s sensors. Whether it means that it has magnetic material inside the otherwise plastic-looking is not mentioned, but I would guess that it does.

I doubt this. On the kickstarter page, they write “We are using an optical sensor that measures 40.000 times per second”, so they explicitly state they want to use an optical sensor, and the phones magnetometers samplerate is probably 100Hz, but certainly not 40kHz.
