PPL price calculations - what did you pay?

It has been two years since I took my PPL, and looking back I found an Excel sheet where I logged all PPL-related costs until my checkride. I started my training in July 2014 and finished July 2015.

I thought future students might have an interest in this, so I’m posting it here:

All prices are in Swedish SEK. Instructor salaries are included in the hourly rate.

Post if you have something similar from you own country.

This could be a fun thread, with people posting how much they paid

I paid £7k or so in year 2000 – 66:05hrs. In those days the landing fee was about £10 and exams were £20 each.

I completed my PPL in 46 hours this year in Malta between the end of January and the end of March. I could have finished it a lot quicker but exams were only held every two weeks which dragged things out considerably.

I paid just over €9800 for 46 hours of flying, skills test, 9 exams, English proficiency, all study material and “hardware” (i.e. rulers, protractors, flight computer etc), landing fees (I only paid one out of my own pocket for landing in LICB), licensing fees and everything else I can think of. I flew a Tecnam P2002JF.

I had around 12 hours already in the book from back in 2006/7, but no loggable time in the left seat between then and 2017.

My costs in 2012 were:

Theory instruction: €500
Membership: €360 / year
One off joining fee: €400 (included pilot bag, log book etc).
Medical: €125
R/T Exam: €75
Theoretical exam: €125
Background / suitability check:€33
45 hrs @ 2,37 / minute – €6400
175 landing fees – €1250
Headset (Lightspeed Zulu) €900

so a smidgeon north of 10k all in. I was lucky because although I didn’t go solo – due to being scared sh1tl3ss of flying – until I had slightly more than 27 hours in dual instruction (yes, I’ve seen others boast about going solo after 22 seconds of instructions yada yada yada) , once I overcame that fear the learning curve was very steep and I was considered up to the level required to attempt the exam with slightly less than 44 hours in my book; fortunately for me, the test flight actually took my figures to the 45 hours, 2 minutes mark so I passed and was handed my licence to learn….

My PPL in 2005 was around DM 10.000 / € 5000 for 32 hours. My IFR in 2002 was € 15.000, if I remember correctly: 35 hours plus 35 hours in the simulator, plus theory test in seven subjects, simulator check, check flight …

Around 4500K EUR for mine (village grass strip, beaten 152 and 172 but a very good instructor)

That’s pretty cool, getting your IR before your PPL ;-)

8500 Euro in 2003. I have to add many car rides to and from the flight school, each way 100 km.

Berlin, Germany

Including travel and staying expenses for 4 weeks in Florida I spend app. 10.000,-$ in 2006
It seems 10.000 is a normal value but in various currency’s.
