Sigfox communication

Hello,
Did anybody try yet if Sigfox communication or similar products work in flight?

It is very narrow band but still I could imagine a few interesting use cases…

Hi Sebastian,

I haven’t but if you’d like an introduction to the company, please PM me.

One could certainly transmit tafs and metars this way, and radar images compress pretty well (many years ago I suggested a way of doing that over SMS, to Avbrief, who then did nothing with it).

The protocol-free way they transmit the packets is exactly the way one would set up a satellite phone service for aviation data: UDP and not TCP. Send each packet a few times… The catch is that the client needs to be on a fixed (or otherwise known to the server) IP.

The Q is whether you get any signal when high up.
