Will do, thanks.

Yes, there are several danger and restricted areas in the North of Scotland. Check AIP and NOTAMs. Remember that you can’t necessarily just cross danger areas in the UK.
No flightplan strictly required.
Also, check here if you haven’t already done so.
Enjoy!

Presently we‘re visiting Edinburgh, flying tomorrow from Dundee to Inverness.

We‘d like to fly that VFR and do a nice round to the northern part of Scotland before landing in Inverness.
Are there any general restrictions? Is a flightplan necessary for that flight?

I‘ll post a report about the visited airports, once we‘re back home.

Why not Southend EGMC?

Presumably more along your route, in much more convenient airspace. (You’re much more likely to get a climb into CAS on departure, while at EGKB there’s a good chance you have to bimble OCAS “VFR” until London / Thames give you a climb – possibly past City airport)

Edit: I use them fairly often when I come back at night (and base is closed), or when I need a place open longer hours when passengers can’t get out of work early enough.
Just make sure you have a high-viz jacket.

of course not, but I just want to make a fuel stop and a small snack is enough for us. So I don’t want so spend the time going to the village for lunch.

I would not judge an airport by its based cafe for practical purposes. There is better food in the village down the road from EGMD

That post made me decide to go to Oxford.
Departure is in two weeks from today.

I let you know about our experiences.

I got this Eurocontrol route (and flew it) from EGPT Perth to EGMD Lydd the other day after a bit of fiddling around, but have not yet manipulated the reverse:
