A little "fly & ski" trip to Bolzano, March 2016

Regarding the Brenner transit: have I got it right that this cannot be done without passing through Innsbruck controlled airspace, so that a working transponder (mode C minimally) would be a requirement? Plus of course the ELT that is an Austrian airspace requirement anyway.

PS the comments about the registration are ridiculous, if they mean what I think to understand then the reg should end in Zulu India but it doesn’t. Neither does the figure 4 fit in. Some people will read what they wish to read whenever and wherever they can, against all odds and against all common sense, there’s no remedy for that. Or tell me what I have been missing..?

Mode S and ELT required in Austria (and also Germany to my best knowledge).

Concerning the registration, I really didn’t notice the “issue” until somebody brought it up. I wish I had those problems…

Me neither

Folks,

first of all, thanks as always for any positive comments. I am happy to share any more info should anyone want to do go to Bolzano, Obereggen, the Dolomites or South Tyrol in general.

On the rest, some of the above comments are ridiculous. And stupid. Some people should resolve to first think, then write. Otherwise, it can cause harm very quickly. So much for Strafgesetzbuch!

Should any comments like that occur again, I will consider leaving this place. Thanks, Jan O. You’ve been missing nothing.

Back on subject: Brenner is indeed quite easy, but any Alps crossing can be a challenge, so I would never question any flatland pilot who decides to make his first foray into the Alps in company of an instructor who has experience flying in the Alps. For who passes through the Frankfurt area on their way south, I am always up for that, at least on weekends.

If I may humbly rephrase my question: is there any hope of flying the Brenner Pass VFR, with only a mode C transponder? In other words, can it be done OCAS? I don’t think so, after what was written here, but one never knows.

I must confess to a level of mental denseness, or as Bosco says stupidity.

I wouldn’t want to imply the chosing of an out of series, short registration (recall N reg does not allow use of letters I or O, an there has to be at least one numeral after the N) implies any sympathies or affiliations. In the UK there is an industry for personalised number plates, so perhaps we read too much into why someone would choose such a number plate or registration – hence my half glass full question, whether the registration had been inherited on purchase, or had it actually been chosen?

We live in a free world so to each their own.

I am not clear about causing harm quickly? Was the question likely to cause harm? Is harm likely to happen to the questioner?

According to the SkyDemon chart, it does not seem to be possible OCAS.

Thanks A_A – even if it is not really good news, you confirmed that a route like EDNY-LIPV will never be a short hop, as claimed by some, not for me at least. Oh well.

@Jan_Olieslagers: It may be possible to get an exemption from ACG, but you’d need it from Germany too – except if you manage to stay completely out of airspaces that require transponders which I imagone to be a major PITA.

Thank you, @blueline, for thinking along. Excuse my ignorance but what do you mean by ACG?
Remaining OCAS has not been a hardship to me as yet in German airspace, but I have neither entered their heartland nor crossed the Weißwurstequator yet ;)
But all of the Pfalz region has been a delight to cruise, and Langen Information – NOT Langen Info! – very professional and useful to communicate with.
