Your opinion on the NOTAM system needed (research)

ICAO has started a questionnaire aimed at better understanding the NOTAM requirements and user types, along with high-level objectives of the future NOTAM system.

It’s official too. In the NTSB hearing on the 2017 SFO incident in which an Air Canada Airbus almost landed on a taxiway in the dark and went around just feet above another passenger jet, the NTSB chairman said: “That’s what Notams are: they’re a bunch of garbage…”

Hello Everybody,

I am still collecting data from this survey but I can already share with you that from the responses it is already obvious that the majority of pilots is unhappy with the system, independent of what they fly, the operational purpose, or their region. There are already activities and high level discussions on how to solve the current situation. I expect it will take few years to move things forward. For the time being I can share an interesting project which you might not be aware of, its called NORM and you can find it here: https://www.icao.int/safety/iStars/Pages/Chat-with-NORM.aspx . It is about using artificial intelligence to assign criticality to NOTAMs. I wanted to close with that positive note to show that there are people out there trying to change things and eventually change will happen. Thank you all for your contribution and feedback!!

Done. Thank you for your survey! Highly appreciate your efforts!

That there aren’t 5 crashes everyday by relying on the garbage that we call Notams is proof enough that they are useless anyway.

Along with Notams, delete all operational limits of airports if they are nothing but paper exercises, as are Notams.

Notams only a paper trail of CYA = like saying „it’s your fault, you didn’t read and memorize all AIPs of the world“

OT:
Greece for instance enforces a „customs“ check for private flights, so your flight routings are limited and you are forced to fly to airports that might experience bad WX etc.. in reality no customs personnel ever checks anything. Useless.

On the bright side: Notams (or rather changing them) might be the one topic in the world we can all agree on!
