Berlin Airfields

I landed there just a few months before it was shut.

Thanks for this, I will be in Berlin this summer for a short visit and will put this ‘on the list’

Understanding that there is no chance of the airport reopening, I wonder if it wouldn’t none the less be interesting for tourism if they flew in a few planes occasionally for old times sake. The ramp looks big enough to land a plane, no need for runways…

Recently I visited the mighty-iconic Tempelhof,ex-airport of Berlin. It is now accessible via organized tours
It started its life during the 20’s as a dirt runway with a small wooden shack as a Terminal but Hitler&Speer in 1936 conceived the idea of creating this 1,2Km massive construction (one of the worlds largest) for the purposes of grandeur propaganda and expanded civil aviation program. The building is still unfinished (like Sagrada Famiglia) since, eventually, he started his WW2 and civil aviation ceased to operate from this location.Huge parts of the building remained empty but its undergrounds served as a weapons and MIL aircraft factory. After the defeat and after the Soviet Blockade of W.Berlin it served as the main recipient of Allieds Life Air Bridge DC3,DC4 freighters bringing in food, fuel, coal and the famous parachuted candies.Later it served as the main civilian Berlin airport for PanAm,BOAC,AirFrance and when Tegel TXL took over as the main one,it remained till 2008 as a secondary airport for regional flights. After the closing it was given to the citizens for pick nicks, skate runs etc and recently as refugee shelters. Now the aforementioned agency performs these impressive History tours.I strongly suggest it to anyone with interests in aviation, history, architecture.

It also depends which direction you are coming from. Coming from the south, EDAZ is clearly the best option, as it minimizes flying time. In a big city like Berlin, it can make a difference of almost 30 minutes whether you have your destination right in front of you or whether you have to go all the way around to the other side of the metropolitan area. Multiply that by two (aller et retour) and you can spend a lot money on taxi fares instead. What a pity Berlin has no proper GA field in the north and west quadrants. But then again, it is still much better than Munich, which (despite being a capitalist city, as opposed to Berlin, which is essentially socialist) does not have any proper GA field within 50 kilometres in any quadrant.

When going to Paris (from Germany) is normally use Lognes, whereas if going to London, I normally use Biggin or Damyns Hall, etc.

Mainz (EDFZ) & Egelsbach (EDFE), Germany

I like EDAZ most, but EDAY is more practical. S5 (within a five minute walk) brings you right in the middle of the city for € 3.10.

I always go to EDAZ. Cheap rental cars (Smart, BMW1, Audi), and a hotel with fair prices at the airport, € 55 for a double room. Also very good infrastructure, nice restaurant, aircraft maintenance. The drive to the city is about 40 minutes if there's not too much traffic.

EDAY Strausberg is much better than EDAZ Schönhagen for a visit to Berlin in my experience. EDAY has the metro right next to the airfield. EDAZ requires a taxi to the long distance train which does operate as frequently as the metro.

I don't think EDAZ offers anything that EDAY doesn't unless you really need a very long runway.

To get from EDDB to the city is not much fast at roush hour (by car) or by train than from EDAY. The EDAY shuttel service to the train station is cheap (10 Euro/10 Minutes) an the train goes in 30 Minutes to the center! The time you spent at EDDT or EDDB with paper and transfer to and from the apron will more than the 10 minutes traveltime more from EDAY! When you need a ILS do it at EDDB and flight VFR to EDAY. Not much options for a GA Pilot at the Berlin area, sry :-(

EDAZ

EDDT - Tegel

If you can get a parking PPR this is the best solution. The costs seem to be reasonable but parking spaces are very rare and in the winter they use the GA parking for deice. I think there is no AVGAS.

EDDB - Schönefeld

No AVGAS and around 120 Euro but with ILS and lots of parking spaces. The GAT is in the middle of nowhere. No chance to get even close with public transport.

EDAZ - Schönhagen

Nice VFR airfield. The IFR approach is promised forever but will not get active any time soon. They have rental cars or they will drive you to the train. But the airfield is quite far outside the city. With traffic you can easily drive one hour if you want to get to the city centre. AVGAS is currently 2,52 Euro including taxes.

EDAY - Strausberg

Similar to EDAZ but a little smaller and on the east side of the city. I don't know if they have rental cars.
