AKI93 fuel

Hjelmco 91/96UL

There was an initiative 10-15 years ago to start selling Hjelmco 91/96UL in Norway. Nothing has come out of it AFAIK. Probably due to the relatively “low” prices we have had on 100LL. With the prices we see on 100LL today though, I think any alternative would be welcome. Looking at the specs, Hjelmco 91/96UL seems to be at the top, followed by Warter’s AKI93. UL91 is far behind and will, if not taken into account, eventually cause detonation problems with the 912 S/ULS. Anyone who don’t believe that should read the service letter from Rotax: SL-912-016, Essential information regarding engine behavior, performance and manifold pressure data for ROTAX Engine Types 912 and 914 (Series). Revision 2 as of 04.12.2020.

Hello everyone!

This is a very interesting topic which I would like to take part in.

Indeed, AKI93’s main purpose is to target Rotax engine users who usually use automotive gasoline, which is qualitatively not recommended for aviation for various reasons. AKI93 is certified unleaded and ethanol-free.
What you need to remember is that UL91 and 100LL aviation gasolines have specific standards and are made from aviation components (priced differently from automotive components) and have very specific production and transport methods. So a different price. Those who think 100LL avgas is too expensive should also think about the volume used annually (in France we’ll say approx. 22 million liters perhaps per year, whereas in France we consume in one day … I’ll let you work out the mind-boggling figure that represents).

in terms of engine octane index (MON – the reference base for engine manufacturers, not to be confused with RON)
Avgas 100LL > MON min 100 (see 101 at Warter)
UL91 > MON min 91
AKI93 > MON min 88
SP98 > MON rather 87 and not 98 as many think!

Rotax has this recommendation: min. MON 85 RON95, min AKI 91

AKI93 has an AKI index of min 93. This gasoline has been tested on Rotax engines with interesting results (e.g. oil and EGT temperatures much lower with AKI93 than with SP98!), and AKI93 is stable over time, unlike automotive gasolines.

In terms of pricing, Warter delivers in bulk from 2000 liters upwards, with a price during the week of March 11 of 2.08 euros per liter, all taxes included. A more than attractive price for a petrol made in a refinery specialized in aviation gasolines, with transport as dedicated as for 100LL or UL91), and above all with performances far superior to SP98.

Cuers airfield has an AKI93 station which went into service this week.

I don‘t believe that this fuel can be noticeably superior to „SP98“.

For France, here and there, it could be interesting anyway (since almost no airfield carries SP98 so far). In Germany, many GA airfields already have ethanol-free quality SP98 at this cost.

Also you should declare your the name of your company. Well, it is obvious. Otherwise your posting may be deleted. Guidelines.

It would also be useful if you participated in this much more important thread

it isn’t, but it’s “certified”

Here is Total response : link
The fuel sold now at LFPN and LFPL is a true aviation mogas, ethanol-free like the one from Warter.
Just more expensive but paid by credit card.

Total say in the article they want to sell it @ 20 airfields across France by the end of 2024.

Given the fall of 100LL and the failure of UL91, they go for a Rotax-specific fuel.

Cool, what’s the price compared with 100LL or UL91 ?

FYI, mogas at the new LFPN pumps costs 2.39€/L. Avgas is 2,89€/L. Both are sold by Total.
RON98 on the roadside costs about 1,85€/L.

Car fuel prices have gone up since. I don’t have more recent info.
50cts/L cheaper than 100LL/UL91 is probably their pricing strategy.
