Upgrading a G1000/KAP140 Combo w/out WAAS to G1000 NXI with WAAS & GFC 700 in a 182T

Hi,

the Title pretty much says it all, I’d like to upgrade my older G1000 with minor quirks (Range Knob not working properly, KAP140 has a small datum when on HDG mode) to a recent NXI in combination with WAAS and the integrated GFC 700.

Does anyone know if the G1000 NXI uses the GIA64 or the GIA63W ? The latter seem to be hardly available – only used units (as seen in the other thread) and I’d favor new units rather than something used when upgrading all at once.

Thanks

182T

AFAIK NXI can use both GIA63W and GIA64W, so I would definitely go for GIA64W.

Hello
I’m not a specialist, but owns a 182T with same configuration, and monitor possibilities for update.
Diamond / Mooney owners, with legacy G1000, may also shine to provide their knowledge.
Some will tell you should have run far away from such installation before purchase :-)

As Cessna owns the TC (including G1000/KAP140 set-up), modifications of the avionics can only be provided by Cessna.
Right now, the only modification allowed by Cessna through an SB, is an upgrade to WAAS

Maybe Cessna will plan an upgrade path to NXI sometimes, but nothing is available today, and I didn’t read anything it was work in progress.
NXI would require new GIA, new GDU (screens), probably new GTX (transponder).
GFC700 would also need new servos.
And, differently to the WAAS upgrade which is rather straightforward (you swap GIAs and antennas, and keep same cables), NXI may need work cable (this is just a guess).
I would set this north of 70k$ (guess again).

At this moment, I’ve read about NXI upgrade on much bigger aircrafts, like TBM and King Air.
I would be interested to learn if other types were offered NXI upgrades.
Emir may know something for Diamond future.

Hi Voyageur,

I’ve read your other article about the vertical capture of the KAP140 with great interest, this was one of the points why I opted to throw out all the old stuff and go for the NXI instead of adding WAAS to that > 10y old system :)

The upgrade path is described by Garmin already in http://static.garmin.com/pumac/190-02128-04_03.pdf under SA01830WI G1000_NXI_Supplemental_Maintenance_Manual_local copy so in my understanding it should be possible – but yes, it’s for sure not cheap :)

I didn’t know this document. Thank you !
Very interesting to read that NXI can be configured with KAP140 ! So definitely preparing future paths for upgrade.

Still nothing official, some unofficial info says it will be available but no dates have been released.

Knowing how much some upgrades were priced, I would be happy with this price
