New or overhauled camshaft - IO540 ?

Peter, we did not make it to Brac because our small cylinder issue turned out into big camshaft one; our shop offered the options of re-grinding and re-hardening the old camshaft and supplying a new one; and the owner said that if it was his own aircraft, he would go for a new one; so did we; by the way, the old camshaft is a nice decoration; but my wife disagrees

On my TIO540-AE2A, as strange as that might sound, buying a camshaft (about 3500 Euro) was way more expensive than to buy a complete camshaft and tappet kit 05K22755 (about 2500 Euro).

Well, funny that… On an overhaul you change the tappets anyway.

I was surprised to hear you change the conrods too.

This is Lycoming’s recommendation for “mandatory” parts replacement at overhaul.

On my TIO540 they did not change the connecting rods at overhaul. If the rods would have needed replacement they would have charged them separately.

Hmmm, you are quite right I just called the shop and they don’t put in new conrods but the conrods must be within new limits. Apparently they get shorter over time!
