EDRG Idar-Oberstein for lunch and fuel

Menu Romeo mit Bratkartoffeln is really delicious!!!

Sierra – Schweinekamm saftig gebraten
Lima – eine ganze Schweinelende, zart und mager
Romeo – das Roastbeef für Kenner
Foxtrott – zartes Rinderfilet

Dankewel, Vieke!
The EDRG resto has a strong reputation, I have long been curious about it. According to www rumour the (mandatory!) radio operator doubles as a cook.
In fact, as I understand things, it is common courtesy here to order one’s lunch while on downwind:

That is true, I have a picture of him next to his radio. He is also the only one who speaks a little bit English (when your German is not that good ( like in my case) – but I am sure yours is a lot better. )

We ordered in downwind

I would recommend the following:

1) Spangdahlem – sometimes active during the week, however I suggest when you cross the border, just call Langen Information on 123.525, they’ll tell you whether they are active and if they are, you can ask them to organise a transit, usually works.

2) Trier (EDRT) would be a place directly on your route which I could recommend for the restaurant – however no MoGas…. For that you’ll need either Pirmasens or Idar Oberstein, whereby the fuel at Pirmasens is significantly cheaper (1,69 compared to 1,85 / litre). Pirmasens is also in the “Landegutscheinheft”, if you’ve got it.

3) Concerning your routing, why not go direct – just call Strasbourg Information on 120.700 (unless Langen sends you to another frequency), they’ll assist you through the airspace. If you

Idar-Oberstein—picturesque and a great place for lunch. The disadvantage of Baden Baden is you’ll need a taxi to get food (don’t miss the aviation museum in one of the reinforced camouflaged hangars); the advantage is you could win back all your trip costs at the casino! I’ve never been to EDKV. I wouldn’t knock Koblenz—it’s actually quite dramatically sited—restaurant middling.

This would avoid congested areas like Strasbourg.

In terms of traffic Strasbourg is hardly congested. You hardly ever see an airplane there, at least outside the parlimentary sessions.

LFPT, LFPN

“congested” was not the right word, sorry. “Complex airspace” was what I meant. Especially as my transponder is not always very reliable.

Any PIREPs on EDRX Neunkirchen/Bexbach please?

Looking at it as a potential stopping off enroute Munich. Usual data points: AvGas, accommodation, car hire. VFR trip.
