Recommendations for this summer in Sweden

Thanks a lot to all of you for the helpful advices.

Regarding ESSA, I landed there a couple of years ago and then they didn’t have a requirement for handling. We landed during the weekend and it was very smooth, both exit and entry procedures.

Handling is compulsory now. Self-handling is possible if you have a self-handling contract with the airport. You could possibly get away by claiming self-handling without having a contract, but you would still need ground transportation to and from the terminal. If you ask the airport company, they will charge you SEK 450+VAT for a one-way trip! Unless you could get a hike with some ground staff, it would be cheaper to use a handler!

Airborne – with the 3rd rwy at Arlanda, it’s completely under capacity. They could easily turn the 3rd rwy over entirely to non-scheduled traffic and voila – Stockholm would have the GA and business airport it needs. But of course that will never happen due to the pan-European hubris of thinking that smaller aircraft can’t mix with bigger. They wrinkle their noses at GA in disgust.

In principle I agree, but Arlanda is actually not “completely under capacity” because the 3rd runway can’t be used as planned because of environmental restrictions. Approaches to 01R and departures from 19L go straight over a nearby town and approached/departures would expose some 30 000 residents to higher noise levels than law permits

When the runway was built, the airport company promised that curved approaches to the 3rd runway would mitigate noise problems, but although there is a curved RNP AR approach to 01R, the airport management now doesn’t expect curved approaches to be generally used for many years to come.

Things might have changed since then of course.

Even if AOPA Europe isn’t very powerful, please support them as they’re they only ones on our side. What other voices are there?

Do you have anny information about the fees at Arlanda and maybe could recommend a handling company? In some countries there are handling companies giving discounts to AOPA members.

Grafair has given me a quote of SEK 750+VAT for a 1157 kg SEP (e.g. a 180 hp PA28/C172). They are based at Bromma (ESSB), but also provide handling at Arlanda on request – so prior notice is required to [email protected] or phone +46 8 982600.

I’ve also talked to ASE who mentioned a similar figure, but that was a negotiated price, so you need to check for yourself. Call them or e-mail to [email protected].

Please note that haven’t actually flown to Arlanda myself in recent years. As I’m based only 20 miles from Arlanda, I don’t have any real need of landing there except to use the airport as an alternate.

We have been there once. But to other users: Be careful and check the website bofore. ESKC is closed for traffic every second sunday and it is only publised on their website. When we have been there we gave them a phonecall before and they missed to tell us about the closing on sunday. So we got a real sundaymorning surprise when arriving on the field, wanting to depart to the Ålands.

The situation is different now. We have had a very long fight with the authorities in the courts about operational hours. While this process was ongoing, we were nervous about visiting pilots breaking the rules – that’s why the airport used to be PPR H24. I’m sorry to hear that you were given incorrect information.

Anyway, the rules have now been finally determined and the airport is no longer PPR H24 but has published hours. AIP and Jeppesen both have correct info on the op hours. (I know, because I sent them the info myself!) The op hours rules are slightly involved so we still have PPR at certain times rather than publishing an overly complex set of rules.

Regarding the Sundays, the airport is now PPR on Sundays from June 15 and August 15 only. During this period, you can expect to get permission for Sundays in even-numbered weeks. You will not get permission for Sundays in odd-numbered weeks.

Can recommend Siljansnas having spent time there as it was one of my case study AirParks for my MSc. http://www.siljanairpark.se/

There is some pilot accommodation, a couple of twin room wooden chalets with bathroom facilities and sauna en bloc a short walk away. A club house where you can cook yourself something.

There is also a museum on site with some amazing aircraft, and also the Siljansnas Brewery.

The residents are very friendly and its only a short walk into the village. A craft gift shop and supermarket, a nice hotel restaurant a taxi ride away and a couple of local eateries.

When I was there I was able to borrow a car for the cost of fuel

PM me if you want direct contact details

I wouldn’t go to Malmö. A huge, mostly deserted airport with zero GA atmosphere. Far from Malmö city, which isn’t the most exciting.

I have been there at the end of may and it was realy nice. There is a cheap Airport-Bus which will take yout to Malmö City. http://www.flygbussarna.se/en/malmo

And the city itself is nice to see and if you like to get some realy good food check out http://bastardrestaurant.com/ . :-)

BTW: When departing we got some problems with a conflicting flightplan at brussels and the guy on the tower was very helpful to get the problem solved.

- Höganäs ESMH, every tuesday they have a small fly-in and serve herring sandwiches. A popular thing for the local flyers.
- Hässleholm ESFA, every wednesday a similar fly-in but serving waffles instead. Yummy!
- Visingsö,a small island in Vättern, very popular in summer
- Visby (ESSV) Gotland, a very popular city for Swedes. Avoid the week of June 28→July 5, then it’s a huge conference with all politicians and policy people who think they are very important ;)
- Anholt (Denmark), a small island in the middle of Öresund. Great beaches and a small harbour with a few restaurants. 45 minute walk from the airport to the harbour

Further north, Gargnäs is very nice as well as Siljansnäs. If you continue north there are some beautiful sights around Kebnekaise and Kiruna, but remember to be prepared for such a flight as it’s in the mountainous area.

Thank you very much Martin.

I put ESFA (Hässleholm) as well on our routing as ESSI (Visingsö). The waffles have been a real convincing argument. :-)
I know Högänas very well. The have done once our 100h maintenace on the our Piper Arrow. Great guys.
Visby I also do recommend, I have been there 4 weeks ago.
Never heard before about Gargnäs (ESUG), but I have had a look on the internet after your advice and have choosen it as destination when going more to the north.

Can you tell me a little bit more about the sights in the north arround Kebnekaise and Kiruna. We do have two weeks to fly arround so it will be nice to continue to the north. At the beginning of June I have been at Lulea, years ago in Kiruna itself. And we would like to discover more of the area.
