Stranded in Austria

No, it’s not about flying. As a result of a motorbike accident, I’m in a hospital in Steyr with fractures of a collarbone and several ribs, and may need advice from someone local to the area about optimal arrangements to get myself and the bike out of here once they discharge me, etc. If anyone can help, please drop me a line.

Hi Anton,

I have family in Amstetten, live in Vienna during the week and in our house near Eferding (Upper Austria) during the weekends. So not too far from Steyr. Feel free to PM me for any needs.

All the best for your recovery!

Get well soon Anton. What a bugger!

All the best!

Anton, I hope you can get some help. I’ll be on a motorcycle in that area in a couple of weeks. We used to call it the motorcycling three-pack: collarbone, ribs and punctured lung…

Get well soon, and best of luck.

PS I have not forgotten the question you asked me, not that it’s your concern at this point, and will see the guy this weekend.

PS I don’t think it would work for you, but it might be worth mentioning the ADAC truck that travels the alps picking up crashed motorcycles and taking them ‘home’ – which i guess means Germany only. We’ve used the service a couple of times. Could it be the Czechs have something similar?

Best of luck again from me.

…which i guess means Germany only.

The European automobile clubs are all connected. If you are a member of one of them in your home country, then usually the foreign ones will assist you as well. Often free of charge, depending on your contract. I got excellent assistance in Italy and Switzerland based on my German ADAC membership.

All the best and make a speedy recovery!

The issue is typically getting a motorcycle from one country to another, not local assistance. The ADAC truck drives all over Europe, recovering motorcycles in all countries without need to contact other Auto clubs.. but I believe all the bikes ADAC collects are transported to Germany. Perhaps Anton can find something similar to help him get the bike home (outside of Germany)

I’ve been making motorcycle trips in Europe regularly for a long time, and inevitably there comes a situation where a bent or broken motorcycle needs to be transported a long way back to base without a rider.

First of all – get well soon! Austria has two roadside assistance organizations, the ÖAMTC (the bigger one) and the ARBÖ. Suggest you contact them for transporting the bike back home. If you need some specialist care, PM me, I have contacts in the medical field in nearby Linz.
