This is what happens when private airfields cannot produce income.
Drag racing in that case.
This lovely airport used to operate 100km west of Athens Greece until 2012.

The airfield is still listed in the AIP as licensed but off course has a PPR note: Private Airfield.PPR by the owner
Just 2nm north of it there is a lovely 600m runway grass ZZZZ field where we nowadays hang out for the 100 Euro coffee.

Is the Ikaros “owner” still AWOL?
Somebody from the UK landed there a few years ago, following a “somewhat less than exhaustive” due diligence, and reported that it resembled the Marie Celeste
I didn’t realise there was another airfield so close. Why did that guy spend all that money on Ikaros? Admittedly it’s far more useful, with its hard runway.
A great loss, especially in Greece.
Yes he is (as far as aviation is concerned) AWOL, maybe he was down there with the Drag racing mob.
LOL! (on the Marie Celeste) that is what it looked like after 2012 for few years till drag racers popped in.
He had not managed to get a business going there, the landing fee was some 10~15 Euro per landing for the few visitors, the loans were ongoing,
go figure with the comparison of that with a venue like the above every once in a while.
The paved 980m (Ikaros ZZZZ) is one owner, opened in 2003 and discontinued flights in 2012. He made some efforts to start up or to attract some US general aviation type of investments but they never materialized because Europe is not USA …
The 590m grass (Kopaida ZZZZ) is another owner, not the businessman type but the practical agricultural crop duster type, opened in the early 80’s and still holding on well with Sailplanes towing, based mobile home/cabins, light aircraft hangar, Ultralight School, Parachute school, and a nice coffee-tea-lunch canteen (souvlaki pork sticks etc. from local farms!) all on site.
So they’re not the same. 590m of grass cannot offer what 980m of asphalt could.
Both sites have runways edge to edge in the property (no extension potential unless other property is bought).
The area both fields sit in is an (aviation) safety paradise, a dried lake from the 18th century with lots of history, given to the farmers after an irrigation network was constructed and all the water was moved to nearby iliki lake feeding Athens. Lots of flat fields with no obstructions but it is 50Km from any descent City and 100km from Athens.
