In Africa, the airways often start at a high altitude and since there is no radar environment in most of Africa, I file VFR most of the time, but my route is along IFR airways and waypoints. Most controllers in Africa have no clue about VFR flights “for fun” except in Southern and Eastern Africa. In addition, you will have to report the estimates to waypoints along the way, so it makes sense to use the IFR waypoints as programmed in the Garmin. I would not know how to do without them.
Wow… that’s a huge amount of answers!
What I get out for me is, that it is possible most of the times, but I don’t get any advantages out of it, except perhaps with filling out the flight plans with the intersections instead of GPS coordinates or VOR/NDB names.
Thanks to you all!
