What was your most beautiful airfield on an island?

I think it depends on how you classify “most beautiful”.

The most beautiful island with an airport? Many Greek islands are e.g. Kithira, Santorini, Kalymnos with its spectacular approach… Nearer home there are Losinj and Brac in Croatia, and Elba near Italy.

The most beautiful airport? Not many airports are beautiful when on the ground. I think Kalymnos is the most spectacular on the approach

but many others are scenic too.

Alderney I agree with

ESSI is very nice, different kinds of accomodation possible – tent, flyingclubhouse or a decent hotel with a good restaurant. For the latter one you can use the bycicles from the club.
And of course every east frisian island which are charming in different ways.

On the west of Scotland there are some big islands like Bute and Mull with long runways and nice pubs nearby.

But down here on the south coast there’s really only Ardwall Island which is a decent size with a couple of nice landing fields. It has no pub, but it’s a quiet spot for a picnic:

A little further east are Hestan Island and Rough Island. With FW, we can only land on the causeways at low tide, so I’m not sure if that really counts as an island airfield:

Staniel Cay, Bahamas.

If the pilot has a problem in flight, I think a runway is the beautiful place on Earth.

Thank you I added a few runways in my bucket list.

Barra EGPR might be worth putting on the list:

One of my favourites is Paradise Island, also called Santa Carolina Island as part of the Bazaruto Archipel in Mozambique. It is uninhabited but has a great history including a story that Bob Dylan was there and that he wrote the song “Mozambique” there as well. It has a runway and I hope to visit it again in June. See: http://www.bazarutoarchipelago.com/santa-carolina/

Barra is nice from a flying perspective, but there is otherwise not much to do on the island. I also once shot a video of the landing at Barra in a Piper Archer 2. See:

I like Jersey, Alderney and not so much Guernsey. Jersey is a great island to visit, good (seafood) restaurant at the Oyster bay.

One other island that comes to mind is Aeroe Island in Denmark. You can rent an old VW Beetle at the aeroclub and tour the island. Great in the summer time. See: http://www.aeroeisland.com/

My overall favourite island is not Elba (although nice) but Corsica. I just LOVE that island.

My wishlist island is: Jan Mayen Island. Tried getting permission to fly there, but the Norwegian Airforce denied the permission in the end. See: http://www.sjoerdjanterwelle.com/shortlist-airport-to-visit-jan-mayenfield/

mmmmhhh – Barra looks great.
Wouldn’t do the seawater splashing with my own plane, though.
Isn’t that asking for corrsion ?

(can always do that in a rental – duck and hide)
