Autorouter updates (merged)

Impossible, there are no bugs in my software… maybe “errata” or “functional specification updates”.

Fixed, thanks

What about a ‘secret URL’ that users could bookmark to prevent having to login? something like autorouter.eu/autologin.php?passcode=kkjk21hjjk4kj or auto login by mac address? phone, ipad, computer etc.

How to perform logins and all security aspects associated with that are fairly standardized across the industry. The system does remember your session for some time, it should be a few days. We could extend that time. It detects when your session is expired, sends you to the login page (where your browser can fill in the data) and then right back to where you originally planned to go.

On the subject of login, it would be great to enable federated authentication e.g. Google login.

In what way would you like it (the plog) to be customized?

Being able to add/remove columns (e.g. I don’t care about having the coordinates)
Being able to use as starting up fuel what I enter in the FPL rather than the route fuel calculated, which seems to be the default
Being able to choose Magnetic or True (or both as now)
Being able to display Cumulated ETE (so you know easily if you’re running late/early)
Display TAS in the same box as GS

Most of this is to free up some free space to write down stuff (actual fuel, frequencies etc)

Thank you.

Suggestion: It would be nice if autorouter exposes a way to discuss airports.
We discuss airports sometimes here at EuroGA, but it it unstructured. For example, Biggin Hill is discussed in multiple posts.

I’m not sure what the capabilities are from the DSC forum software, but basically you want to start / read a thread based on the 4 character ICAO airport code…

My current resources for airport reviews are:

eddh.de (German Only)
you-fly.com
pplir.org → has listed airports and people can discuss them.
euroga.org → The destination airport might be discussed already; Needs a google search to find them.

lenthamen, thanks for the suggestion.

We have talked in the past about setting up a database of airport info. This software does have that capability. The trouble is though, as you’ve identified, there are already quite a few sources out there. And they quickly become out of date if they don’t have a critical mass of people updating them, etc.

For now I’d like to stick with people posting in forum threads about an airport. We’ve added a banner in the trips/airports section to encourage people to include both the name of the airfield AND the ICAO code. The on-site search is very fast and reliable. Putting an ICAO identifier in there should bring up results, for example:

autorouter: aircraft performance updates

We’ve released another major update to autorouter focused around aircraft performance. Having a good understanding about an aircraft’s performance serves two main purposes:

  1. find the most suitable routes
  2. provide a perfect briefing pack

Aircraft mass properties

Apart from the maximum takeoff mass (MTOM), there are now a few additional properties, usually a concern for aircraft a bit above the typical C172:

When MLM/MRM/MZFM are given, they show up in the briefing pack and when loading the aircraft, you get warnings if one of them is not met.

Performance model / propulsion

You can now choose among four models for your aircraft:

Depending on what you choose, additional fields such as MP/RPM show up in the cruise and climb settings. For the fixed pitch and constant speed piston aircraft, we default to “shortest time” when we search for a routing. For turboprop and turbojet we default to “least fuel burned”. The reason is that even though you might be arriving a minute earlier with your turbine on a short hop at FL080, you will never want to do that because for that one minute in gain, you burn 50% more fuel. A turbine aircraft has to climb as high as possible, almost no matter where you fly to.

Climb settings

Understanding the aircraft’s ability to climb at different levels is very important. The standard Eurocontrol idea of GA aircraft can be quite a bit off the reality due to the simplistic models they use for those aircraft and one can easily be deprived of an elegant routing because the model climb rate is not enough to meet certain airspace restrictions. As one of the first in the market, autorouter can exchange 4D models with Eurocontrol and override the standard behavior to get it more in line with the actual aircraft. So this is why we do it and now how we do it.
Instead of the standard “climb rate at altitude” table, a lot of aircraft POHs only feature a “time, fuel and distance to altitude” table. It is quite tedious to work out the individual climb rates so we now let you enter the table directly as you find it:

Multiple cruise settings

Until now we only had one table where users would enter different cruise settings of their liking. It was possible to mix fast and slow settings and our profiler tried to make sense of the input and distill a model out of it. If you wanted to maintain and use multiple settings, you had to define multiple variants of your aircraft. Also when calculating the required fuel, we would use a cruise setting for the 30/45 min of holding fuel. Now you can have it all. Your existing aircraft profiles are converted when you open them the first time for editing. We try to sort your cruise settings into buckets and hope to get it right most of the time. You can create any number of settings, give them a name and put them in an order. The first one is always used by default. A special setting is there for holdings.

When searching for a route and choosing an aircraft with multiple fuel settings, the advanced settings give you a list to choose from:

When you open a route and edit it, you can change the cruise setting profile and see how the plan changes. There is a chance it won’t validate anymore because obviously timing changes. You find the field in the Alternates/Fuel settings at the bottom:

Default load configuration

Several users have asked for a way to remember the aircraft loading. There is now a button in the weight & balance section that stores the configuration for future use.

Miscellaneous

  • A better performance wizard for simple aircraft profiles
  • The navlog contains a terrain column which gives the MSA along a 5 NM corridor for the leg, based on the shuttle mission topography data
  • Survival jackets and rafts can now be configured without any extra properties (such as light)

Very impressive.
