High Altitude VFR/IFR

Sure if ATC allows it, you are good to do anything (except VFR in Class A which I have had clearances for in Spain and Italy ). The gotcha is that they can allow something and then after a few mins get a bollocking from a higher authority, like happened to me near Norwich when I was doing an altitude test flight… I got to FL210 and it was stll climbing nicely at 300fpm (it was -39C!) and London Control gave Norwich ATC a bollocking

What stops you from officially flying IFR above FL200? Your celing is 20000ft, not FL200.

There are special wave flying zones which are activated on demand. And just recently I watched youtube video where Klaus Ohlmann said, that it’s always worth to ask ATC, even if it doesn’t always work. He does the crazy stuff:

Just look at the altitude profile, right before the leg between italy and greece he’s at 7000m

If ATC allows it then it’s fine, you can try? in UK, one likely to need IFR flight plan & IFR rated to operate VFR above FL200 (tried once with a friend and it was ok to go up & down few times when testing with and without oxygen), UK gliders & military can fly VFR up to FL240…

Do Gliders have some arrangements on this? I am sure I saw +20kft records in the clubhouse in Bavaria

I read the quotation in that flying above is possible if responsible ATS unit (radar?) allows.

Not?

Germany

ICAO/SERA prohibit VFR above FL195 (Class C in EASA) without prior arrangements

Tried digging German ENR1.2 “VFR” but it does not exist, I assume everybody flies IFR !

The VFR limit at FL200 is part of the ICAO recommendations, and the limit at FL195 is in EU law.

Can anybody point me towards whether in Germany same altitude restrictions apply? (FL195) I’d like to go to FL240 VFR.

So as a follow up, am I correct in assuming that RVSM negative flight above FL280 is not going to be allowed essentially anywhere in Northern Europe?

UK is OK for VFR up to FL195, above which it is banned (Class C and no VFR allowed).

France is generally Class D FL120-FL195, Class A FL200+. VFR is not allowed in most of the Class D (not sure why they did that - perhaps because they had loads of people flying "VFR" in there to avoid the Eurocontrol charges) and of course not in the Class A.

I think most countries, USA included, are Class E or G above FL600, but you have to first get there
