G1000 upgrade to WAAS/EGNOS: LPV, KAP 140, and capturing vertical path

If you need to replace two antennae that could take quite some hours to do properly.

A lot of antenna installations are done badly, with various bodges especially on the grounding (especially on “plastic planes” – see my posts on the TB20 composite roof) and then you need to run a cable under various trims (unless the old cable is re-used, but it may be of poor quality) which needs to be removed and replaced, preferably without stripping all the threads on the screws holding it (which is what the Part 145 outfit which worked on my plane did)

My above comment was on

Labour time average 6-8 hours for reinstall and update software.

which clearly does not hang together

On a C182, it will not take long to replace them. They have the same footprint (GPS/COM/NAV).
I can’t say on other types.

Avionicspexialist said it would take 6-8h time for a trained team. Updating G1000 software is not long if you know well the procedure.

Can a «Grumman» AG5B with an original G1000 be upgraded with the GIA63W?

I would say yes, if Grumann provides the SB.
Is the G1000 attached to the TC ?

Where do the 63W come from ? NOS ?

They come from Diamond aircraft, but these same are installed on Cessna Aircraft check your service builetin for information on what you need to update them.

@Emir
Is there a leak ?

I’m in the contact with seller, I’m waiting for confirmation of my mechanic that he has all other parts and time to perform the upgrade.

Update: I’m going for the WAAS upgrade with GIA63W. The actual installation is planned together with 100-hour service early next year.

Unfortunately, for some time this will be the only way to get any avionics upgrade because Diamond decided to leave DA42 TDI without further upgrade towards G1000NXi. However, they released free STC for GIA63W supporting all part numbers (unlike previous one released by Urbe at €10k supporting only part number -01) and they released V15 for G1000 which is great improvement to current V9.

We’ll see if the future will bring some new options for avionics upgrades for DA42 TDI but currently it’s unlikely because the surveys showed that owners are willing to spend between 100k and 120k while initial Diamonds estimate (while they were still considering it) was around 180k.
