Places to visit....Suggestions!!

Michal, thanks for the link.

@Peter
I don’t know if I’m the Rob you think you think I am Jackie and I flew down to Shoreham to meet up with you about 18 months ago. You kindly took us up in your TB20.

We love nice scenic and authentic places, good bars and restaurants etc. Been to La Rochelle and love it there, even better was a weekend stay on Ile de Re. Some one else has suggested Belle Ile, which look great, however 600M is a little too short for me at the moment. Maastricht was nice to visit, good GA facilities, but an expensive taxi ride into town as the busses wasn’t running on a Saturday

I would love to go to Annecy, but its probably a bit far for just a weekend and maybe would need good weather for a first trip there. I need to sort out my full Central Europe Jepp subscription as well before our next trip which will be the weekend of 17th June…..if anyone is up for an ad hoc meet, let me know.

@Rob2701 : Nothing wrong with being conservative when it comes to rwy length. Belle Ille is however easy, with no obstacles in the approaches.

LOAN Wiener Neustadt Ost, Austria

Wels – LOLW -good gateway to Alp

However, in all fairness, really nothing special apart from the airfield. I can dare to say that, we have our house next to Wels

LOAN Wiener Neustadt Ost, Austria

Deauville is nice, easy arrival and an ILS, great restaurants in town, plus the Casino and the grand hotels. We sometimes go down to Trouville which is nearer to the airport and has loads of places for lunch. We visit in connection with racehorses, there are lots of studs in the area if that’s your bag.

You really should go properly north some time ! Scotland is spectacular from the air, the Faroes and Iceland are incredible, and Norway is stunning.

Seconded. Wales, Cumbria, the Lake District, Scotland north of the central belt, the western Scottish coastline, parts of Ireland/Northern Ireland etc. are all areas of outstanding natural beauty.

actually, if you don´t live close and don´t speak German, this is a good choice. Perfect English on radio, restaurant on site, option of IFR approach to Linz really nearby when weather is bad….

LKKU, LKTB

If you want a different culture from home, then France is the perfect place to go.
La Rochelle, (Lovely harbour, harbour walls and lot of restaurants)
Belle Ile (Big island with lots to see)
Ile D’Yeu (Nice quiet island, small enough to cycle around in a few hours….prebook accommodation)
Paris (Tons to do and see)
Saint Malo (Dinard) -(Nice historical town with lovely old city walls)
Le Touquet (Pretty walk from the airport to town. Nice beach. French culture)
Carcassonne (Amazing medieval working city. 110% scenic)

are all nice and offer great “on the ground” enjoyment.

If you want to enjoy the flight more than what’s on the ground, then you can’t beat the west coast of Scotland. But this has to be done VFR. IFR is the wrong tool to enjoy flying in this area. Because of the terrain, IFR will keep you too high, and if you NEED to fly IFR, then you’ll miss out on all the scenery. You really want to be down low in the terrain. Given your requirement for fuel, and longer runways, you’re a little more restricted, but Oban, Islay, Tiree, Benbecula & Stornoway all work. Though many have restricted opening hours on the weekend. I’d enjoy some flying around that area (make sure to fly by the Isle of Skye) and land at Oban for some fuel. (Good opening hours and fuel availability). This part of the world is all about enjoying the flying rather than what’s on the ground. (To truly appreciate what’s on the ground, you’ll need a car).

Colm, great tips….thank you.

Here are three of my favourites:

LFRQ, Quimper – nice airport, long runway, ILS. Nice town nearby and btw. my french homebase.
LFLD, Bourges – uncomplicated airport, long runway, easy instrument approach. Nice small town nearby, perfect for an overnight stay
LFLY, Lyon – perect GA Airfield with everything you may expect. Lyon, especially the old town, is worth a visit.

I have chosen only the french airports, which will fulfill everything you expect from a countable flight. The good food and the sightseeing aspects will be perfect combined with the flying the Cirrus to build up confidence. All of the mentioned airports are easy to fly to.

I can recommend LKKV Karlovy Vary, which also has ILS approaches on the long RWY. Everything very scenic (landscape and town), People friendly, ATC easy, and the taxi ride into town is only 20 EUR. However it’s very touristic, like most of the scenic landscapes and towns and – in consequense expensive, at least for czech conditions.
