Just called LFEA. They speak english and routinely welcome british pilots.
I think when :
AND
english is spoken by the AFIS and english is allowed during AFIS hours.
I can confirm it’s “Breton only” a Ile-Yeu
La Baule is charming and worth a tour, if anyone around let me know !
I had a look at the VACs also on our airport database and totally failed to find this subtlety.
That’s an interesting question indeed…
During AFIS times, certainly no, as the VAC doesn’t say “FR only” for the AFIS times.
But the interesting thing is that the VAC does not even say “FR only” for non-AFIS times. That is very unsual:
For comparison, see Quiberon, where this is mentioned, as usual:
Thanks !
Can some of you confirm that you don’t need a french speaker for LFEA ?
I have been going to Belle Isle (LFEA) for the last 40 years,
I can only claim 25; but I keep going back at least twice a year.
I find everything about the Island is perfect.
Continue to curse Covid-19 for frustrating my trips there this year.
I have been going to Belle Isle (LFEA) for the last 40 years, it’s a lovely airfield and Island, very relaxed and in good weather an ideal spot for a weekend away. Quiberon (LFEQ) is another favourite, with a good clubhouse and helpful members….I had a brake problem there and was inundated with volunteer helpers to sort it.
And if you want more sophistication, La Baule (LFRE) is a short flight from Belle Isle, once again a good aeroclub and great beaches.
Pity we can’t get there at the moment without having to spend 14 days banged up at home.
Thanks Jujupilote
A good read and photos as always
Nice report of Brittany (I am nearby at LaBaule now ) and Belle Lilloise is always worth it !
VFR in France at 3000ft, I found it may make sense to land, check weather and takeoff again, takes 10min less than the data-link refresh rate
I don’t see the need for ADL because I only fly high (above 3000ft) when cavok.
Below 3000ft, 3G reception is good enough to get metar/tafs.
I was referring to radar images of course, not TAFs/METARs, which are only good for checking the destination weather (and that of nearby alternates), but it‘s radar which (in summer) is so useful to get a good picture of what is ahead.
Anyway, if you don‘t want to get the satellite receiver, get the app (or any other suitable one) which allows you to internet download and dispaly radar images inflight.
