Corona / Covid-19 Virus - General Discussion (politics go to the Off Topic / Politics thread)

Physically blocking them seems to be more reliable than a paper notice. On the occasion I’ve had to retake a property I changed all the locks as I really don’t think a piece of paper would have stopped them entering.

Other than the fact it is an International Airport, one would assume requiring breaking through security to gain full access, then avoiding all apron security, the Police etc.

I have never contemplated pitching up breaking through security, into a DASH 8 Q400, and stealing it.

Not saying it could not happen. We do live in very strange times..

I do think stopping events and gatherings is a good idea and probably should have been done sooner, same with border controls.

Closing borders at this stage is largely a symbolic action. Stopping flights likewise – the number of infected people who come into the country that way is a lot lower than the number of infected already in the country.

These measures only make sense BEFORE the virus has spread into a particular area beyond the ability to trace all contacts of those who are diagnosed.

Stopping mass gatherings is also relatively ineffective, the vast majority of infections happen in daily interactions (at work, when socialising, and when travelling in public transport, probably in that order). The name says it all – “daily”. The percentage of time people spend at large gatherings is very small compared to those.

But of course SOMETHING MUST BE DONE.

Restricting ALL travel or restricting ALL interaction would make a difference – but restricting marginal activities won’t beyond the symbolism.

As I said, should have been done sooner. but bulk public transport does bring people together.

I think the horse has already bolted now, but if any of these measures do reduce the interactions because of the exponential nature of this it can have a significant benefit.

I have relatively few interactions and have just scaled back even from there. I’d rather not contribute to the problems. Saying that I would like to be able to go out for a flight if there’s a nice weather window. But I can do so without having to interact with anyone.

I have never contemplated pitching up breaking through security, into a DASH 8 Q400, and stealing it.

It happened in the US in August 2018

Was that not the maintenance engineer who nicked it from outside the hanger and later committed suicide in it?

I think the way such a plane would be moved would be by the two pilots going quite openly though security, in the full Col Gaddafi uniform, getting the plane ready, and using reverse thrust (or somebody on the ground crew helping out for some cash) taxiing out and taking off, perhaps just after the airport closes, or early in the morning when there is light but before tower is staffed.

Best to do it when the tower is empty and then nobody will notice until it is too late, if at all. This is important. I recall a post on a UK aviation chat site by a retired ATCO who used to work at one of the larger airports and they had a list of planes hanging on the wall which owed the airport money and which were not permitted to move. I would therefore expect tower staff to make a very fast phone call to the fire crew to block the runway if they saw one of them being moved. So you want either an empty tower or an empty fire station, and preferably both.

Also not every airport has the 24/7 armed security of Heathrow or Gatwick. At all airports you can get in via some hangar, for example. I could post specific examples but I won’t
