I believe VAT has to be paid in the country of owner’s residence but you have to check with someone who’s sure about that

That is the end-goal (we are only talkimg the context of Eu countries), but getting there is not always straightforward:

-If you import it in a country where you are VAT-registered then is it straightforward.
-If you import it in a different country, and you are a person vs a business, then you will pay it at the country of import.
-If you import it in a different country, and you are a business, then you will typically pay it at the country of import, then you should be be able to recover it…eventually, meantime you also have to pay for it in your own country…

The logical thing would be not to pay it at the importing country, but unless you are VAT-reg’d there, it may take some time to achieve that.

Bottom line is : find out in advance, and unless really advantageous import where you are VAT reg’d.! Datapoints: Ireland is easy, Estonia and Slovenia are difficult.

If you are a private individual, then it won’t make a big difference (other than the rate) since you will not have to pay VAT again if you have evidence of having paid for it elsewhere.

Bear in mind even if you ant to keep N-reg’d you will have to import the aircraft and pay VAT (unless exempt for one of the valid reasons) if you intend to permanently base the aircraft in the EU.

OK, next question… I got a quote from a company here to ship the plane. It’s pretty reasonable, under $10K, BUT… what I end up with is a container full of 182 parts in a container port somewhere in France. I’d kind of assumed – wrongly – that they would quote me for the end-to-end job. But thinking about it, how could they? How could they possibly know everyone competent to reassemble the plane everywhere in Europe?

I’ve asked them if there is anyone anywhere in Europe they have worked with in the past – since one of the nice things about planes is that they fly, it doesn’t matter much where the reassembled plane ends up.

So… does anyone have any ideas about a shop I could trust to unpack the container, put the wings back on and whatever else will need doing? Ideally someone who has done it before.

Many thanks,

John

Strasbourg Air Service in, ahem, Strasbourg.

They are Cessna specialists, and if they can reassemble a T28 from a container, I am pretty sure they can put together a Cessna too.

Any reasonably competent A&P/IA will be able to reassemble your Cessna; it probably will just have the wings removed and nothing else.

Throw in a couple boxes of oil and all your favorite consumables as part of the container :)

I don’t know them but according to their website, this company has done it :

I am asking questions but have few connections.

Why would an inspection authorization be required?

Thinking (seriously) of importing a Baron58 as well in the coming weeks. This is a very helpful thread. Anyone have any experience importing a Baron US-FR?

The main problem now for a slow aircraft is that you cannot night stop in Greenland. Did not check Canada since a long time.
Otherwise winter might not be the ideal time. My last crossing was January and we had the chance to get a nice window despite very cold weather
